Review // Essence Long-Lasting Lipstick: 04 On the Catwalk!

By Chaste & Beautiful - Sunday, July 31, 2016

Hiya there gals,

I hate talking about one lipstick but that’s the way it’s going to be, since I just purchased one Essence lipstick after the hype was created over its emergence in the market. I previously bought one Essence lipstick about 3 years ago and it was a complete disappointment. After that experience, I hesitated this time too but then decided against it, despite my instincts warning me not to trust Essence lipstick again.

Essence has a way with designing their products in a cute way and I believe they should be spending more on the quality, rather than the packaging and designing. So, let’s being the postmortem of this Marsala colored lipstick that attracted my attention, due to its color.

Price, Purchase and Packaging

Essence Long-Lasting Lipstick, “04 On the Catwalk” was bought by me from Al-Fatah for PKR 430 only. Cheap! huh? It is a black plastic tube with a red ring in the center and the lipstick inside has a brown, pinkish, plus reddish tint that is pretty beautiful. It is a travel-friendly packaging, as the lid shuts tightly sometimes, still you can carry it around safely.

Quality and Quantity

This is a 3.8 gms of product, that is sheer, and it’s entirely my fault that I happen to prefer matte lippies. You must be thinking why buy it then? Well, I have already explained it and the solution for sheer lippies is to use them during winter. Oh yes, it will definitely keep your lips moisturized, if used in colder months. The pigmentation is good enough and buildable, though lasting power isn’t much to be happy about and it is definitely transferable. Smell is typically candy-like, with a hint of chemicals too and I don’t like it, though it’s not much of a bother.

My Thoughts

I use it sometimes when it isn’t as humid as it is currently. It’s certainly not suitable during the summer, especially monsoon season. As I said the color is beautiful and buildable but not a stand-out. Also, I’ve noticed that after applying it, my lips appear shrunk and narrow. There are such lipsticks that provide a very copious look but don’t expect this lipstick to make you noticeable; it’s not even near that level.

The color is also pretty but doesn’t stay put for long, moreover it gives me the feeling of something heavy and sticky on my lips and I then want to wipe it off with a tissue and believe you me, I do feel better after removing it. Really, you can get better lipsticks in this price range, such as Medora and Sweet Touch. Then after using liquid lipsticks, it is now difficult to like these lipsticks, perhaps because liquid lippies are way off cooler and easier to wear.

Anyhow, you might like it in the winter months and I am saving it up for those days. All in all, I would rate it as an average lipstick that gets 2.5 out of 5.00 from my side. It doesn’t deserve more than this, but it can surely be tried by those on a budget or the ones bent upon giving every makeup product, a go.

Recommendation

If you can tolerate sheer formula lippies, do give it a shot.

Would I Repurchase

Of course, not! I am much better off with liquid lippies.

Have you tried any Essence lipsticks, What are your thoughts?

  1. I have this one and I purchased it two years ago, when the hype on liquid lipsticks was not as strong as it is now. This lipstick is not bad, a little sheer but a nice red shade. Lovely review girl! :)

  2. Essence lipsticks have really different formula for each lipstick which i noticed. However it sounds like a good every day lipstick as i love to wear sheer coverage as well but they are not long lasting no doubt.

  7. I'm not a fan of sheer lipsticks as I don't see the point for them so I'll be giving this a miss. I need my lipsticks to be full coverage as my lips themselves are not pigmented.

  10. Hi, so sorry to know that this lipstick didn't work out for you, it's actually one of my favourites! But then, I live in Germany, where we seldom experience hot and humid weather, and never as hot and humid as in Pakistan, so maybe the formula behaves better here. It doesn't come very sheer on me, in fact, after about three swipes it gives quite a decent pigmentation. My only complaint is that it doesn't last beyond 3 hours and that's when I don't eat or drink anything, still, it fades evenly and leaves behind a nice stain. It's also moisturizing, which makes it perfect for the cold and dry climate of Autumn and Winters, that is, for eight of the twelve months. However, the reason I love it is the shade. I usually prefer "pinkish-brown" neutrals but there's something irresistible about this lovely "pinkish-reddish-berry" combination, and in spite of intensive research I still haven't been able to come across a lipstick that brings this colour on my lips, hence making it special to me :-) But anyway, thanks for the review, it was quite interesting to get another perspective on this lipstick.

    1. Hey Ramla, well I am glad this product works for you but it certainly didn't appeal me much apart from its color. I like to use this lipstick in wintertime but sheer formulas in summertime aren't for me. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your extensive feedback. :)

  11. oh that's so intersting that it goes on sheer for you because it gives me good coverage! the point about the humidity is key though. i often wonder how people in hotter climates deal with having their make up during humid weather. sorry to hear this didn't quite float your boat!

    1. Yeah, folks like me who live in hot and humid places certainly cannot stand sheer formulas. I like to use this lipstick in winter months. Thanks for stopping by. :)

    2. Hi Jenn, actually, it surprised me too! I am not a fan of sheer lipsticks myself, and like you, it didn't come on sheer on me as well. It seems that the climate has a strong effect on the formula of this lipstick, if heat and humidity can actually change it to being 'sheer'! Maybe Essence, being a German brand, is more appropriate for places with climate similar to European countries? In any case, it's good to know that someone else had a similar experience as me :-)
